Explore Europe with an Interrail ticket

British students are lucky to have Europe on their doorstep, and one of the best ways to explore the continent is with an Interrail ticket that lets holders travel around a number of countries on a budget or even free!

As a final farewell to the EU before Brexit, UK students who turned 18 before July this year can apply for one of 15,000 free Interrail passes worth up to £400 each thanks to the EU’s DiscoverEU scheme. However, even if you are not one of the lucky ones that gets a free pass, a few hundred pounds for a month or more’s travel across one of the world’s most fascinating continents is a bargain.

The pass means that you can watch the sunset sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence, jump off the rocks at Dubrovnik’s popular “Hole in the Wall” bar, try and get into Berlin’s famous Berghain nightclub, or explore the history and entertainment in Prague – all with a single ticket.

Whether you’re the sort of person that likes to research heavily plan everything to the finest detail, or someone who prefers to wing it with little more than a rucksack and a Rough Guide for company then Interrailing is a must for the university holidays. You will be surprised by how much is on offer across the continent for free, with many cities offering free or heavily subsidised student admission to museums, galleries, and more. And then there is the countryside only a short bus ride from the train stations, whether you want to wander around Croatia’s stunning Plitvice lakes or explore the battlements of one of the many castles in Germany’s Black Forest you will never be short of things to do.

If you time your trip well, you could also coincide your travels with the numerous music festivals that take place over the summer, from Barcelona’s popular Sonar festival, to Serbia’s castle-situated EXIT festival, to the naked swim-friendly Roskilde in Denmark. All music tastes are catered for across the continent, so not matter if your jam is EDM, indie, thrash metal, or folk, you will find something to your taste being held somewhere new over the summer months.

Hostels, hotels, and Airbnbs are available everywhere these days, but don’t forget that sleeper trains means you can get further overnight and save some money on a night’s accommodation as well!

What are you waiting for?
